Vacectomy
Vasectomy is a form of male birth control that cuts the supply of sperm
to your semen by cutting and sealing the tubes that carry the semen.
- A simple and safe minor procedure that takes about 20 to 30 minutesto complete.
- Does not interfere with a man’s sex drive.
- Prevents the flow of sperm out of the
testicles, but doesn’t reduce a man’s testosterone level or affect his sex life. He
will have a normal erection and ejaculation response.
- A vasectomy is considered a permanent
form of birth control. However, it can be
successfully reversed, especially if the
vasectomy was performed in recent years.

PROCEDURE
OPTIONS & INFORMATION
At Alpine Urology, we offer you two safe and comfortable procedures…the traditional
vasectomy and the scalpel-free vasectomy. Your vasectomy will be performed at one of our five convenient locations. For either procedure you will be administered a local anesthetic,
meaning you will remain alert but the scrotalarea will be numbed.
TRADITIONAL VASECTOMY
The patient is given a local anesthetic to the
scrotal area. The surgeon will make one to two small incisions on either side of the scrotum and pull the vasa deferentia through these incisions. The vasa deferentia are severed and either tied or cauterized, then secured with a suture or surgical clamp.
SCALPEL- FREE VASECTOMY
The patient is given a local anesthetic to the scrotal area. The surgeon feels for the vasa deferentia tubes under the skin of the scrotum and holds them in place with a clamp. A tiny hole is made in the skin. The hole is stretched to allow the surgeon to pull out the tubes, which are cut and either
tied or cauterized.
Both procedures are safe and effective and recovery time is similar for both.

POST-PROCEDURE GUIDELINES
The patient should arrange for
transportation home.
The patient will be instructed to place ice
packs on the scrotum; over-the-counter pain
medication is recommended. Most patients recover from the procedure in less than one week. During the week the patient is instructed to:
- Stay off his feet as much as possible
- Avoid strenuous exercise and sexual intercourse for approximately five days
- Wait two days before showering
- Avoid tub baths for approximately
one week
- Wear tight-fitting shorts or an athletic
supporter to protect the scrotal area
